Standardized Content and Distribution of Important Surgery Preparation Information for Duke Health Patients

Challenge:

At Duke Health, preparing patients for surgery involves not only a consultation for anesthesia, but also a unique program to ensure patients are as prepared as possible for surgery. Prior to surgery patients may benefit from information such as a nutrition consultation, smoking cessation visit, or sleep apnea study. Duke Health was looking for ways to encourage patients to schedule their pre-surgical consultation as early as possible to allow providers the most amount of time to optimize the patient for surgery.

Solution:

Xealth used customized lists to distribute information about the clinic and its benefits to patients prior to their surgery being scheduled. The message was branded as coming from the doctor, and landed in the patient’s portal, replacing paper-based communication. This simple solution informed the patient at the earliest moment about the importance of the pre-surgical visit and the efforts to improve their post-surgical outcomes, as well as bringing all relevant information in one easily accessible spot for the patient.
